Tune into WKHR FM 91.5 radio to hear Hillside residents Harry and Virginal Nicholl's "Big Band" program on Wednesdays 8AM - 10AM and Saturdays 8AM - 9AM. They volunteer at the station, which broadcasts Big Band music of the 1930's, 40's and 50's, twenty-four hours a day from Kenston High School in Bainbridge.
Harry runs the program and Ginny announces the weather. It's quite a commitment. The station takes most of Harry's free time and he has become a local expert on big band music. Each week Virginia comes up with a "word for the day" for her listeners. Harry calls them "Ginny's Snippets." Her snippets have generated a lot of interest with her listeners. They are constantly sending her ideas for new "words for the day."
Their interest in readio began 18 years ago when Harry answered an ad in the paper for a class in Big Band music. After two classes, he was licensed to go "on the air."
The Nicholls have five children and have lived in Chagrin Falls for 40 years. One daughter, Debbie, a popular decorator in town, owns Deborah Nicholls Interiors and is helping to present the Hamlet Home Decorating and Floral Tour in May, and the Downsizing Seminar in June. Ginny sews blankets for babies in New Orleans at Valley Presbyterian Church. Harry attended Western Reserve University, and Virginia, Dennison University. Harry is a retired business executive who worked for Lincoln Electric and Leaseway Transportation. They have been married for 61 years.
The Nicholls moved into Hamlet's Building 12 this past summer and have been very happy. They say Hamlet is a comfortable and nice place to be and they have been treated very nicely. They have become good friends with their neighbor, Berta Studen. Virginia takes Mrs. Hume's writing class in the Atrium and is writing a heritage book.
Ginny's Snippet for this week is: "If you have a new baby and it never cries, never spits up, is no trouble at all, and is beautiful, then you are its grandmother." They have 20 grandchildren so they are experts!
